Any new business endeavor (no matter how good the plan) is somewhat akin to entering into an unfamiliar harbor in thick fog and at night. You double check your navigation, head in slow and have a good hand posted up in the bow to watch for buoys and boats. Even with all the careful preparation it can be an anxious undertaking and you don’t really breath easy until you pick-up a mooring. This was somewhat the feeling we had when we established the Brooklin Boat Yard Brokerage Office just one year ago.
We knew at that time that offering this type of service would be of benefit to the clientele of Brooklin Boat Yard and that a Brokerage Office would be a natural extension of Brooklin Boat Yards new boat construction and boat service operations. However, would we be able to secure boat for sale listings and would we would be able to attract customers for any boats we would offer for sale? These were our questions.
Turns out we needn’t have been so worried. After making inquiries with Brooklin Boat Yard customers and doing a little hunting outside the yard we were able to obtain listings for boats needing to be sold and with the help of the new Brooklin Boat Yard web site along with web based and print advertising we were able to find buyers for the boats we had for sale. Additionally we have worked with other yacht brokerages finding (outside of our listings) just the right boat for our clients.
In all it has been a good first year and we are looking forward to our second year in operation. Our hope is to increase our used boat listings and to help more potential boat owners find the boat of their dreams.
If you are considering the sale of your present boat or the purchase of your next boat we would love to speak with you and help out in any way we can. Contact John Maxwell in the Brokerage Office, phone: 207-359-2193, or e-mail.
Goshawk

In 2000 Robert Stephens was commissioned to design a 46' Spirit of Tradition day sailor. The owner's objective for this boat was to have a drop-dead gorgeous boat that would perform well in local and classic yacht race events and to also provide him with a boat that would be able to quickly cruise from one bed and breakfast inn to another here on the coast of Maine. “Lena”, built here at Brooklin Boat Yard, has now been sailing for four seasons and has met all the criteria mentioned above, sailing fast and turning heads wherever she has been.
“Lena’s” owner has now set his sights on more challenging off shore racing along with Classic and Spirit of Tradition regattas further afield than coastal Maine. He has once again turned to Robert Stephens and Brooklin Boat Yard to provide him with a 76ft Fast Sloop that will combine classic sailing yacht esthetics with much desired state of the art construction and performance with which to pursue his future sailing goals. Hence the birth of “Goshawk”.
An obstacle in the form of an existing back-log of work at Brooklin Boat Yard stood in the way of being able to start and complete the construction of “Goshawk” in time for the owners desired launch date of spring 2005. This problem was solved by entering into a unique collaboration with Rockport Marine of Rockport, Maine. Noted for their work with wooden boats in general and cold-molded composite construction in particular Rockport Marine was contracted to construct "Goshawk's" hull with bulkheads installed and keel attached.
The end result of Rockport Marine’s work was launched at their yard in Rockport, ME and towed to Brooklin Boat Yard on a gorgeous coast of Maine morning (Sept 2, 2004) where it was immediately hauled and moved into Brooklin Boat Yard’s main shop area for completion.
Goshawk is scheduled for launch in the spring of 2005 in time to participate in that seasons Marblehead-Halifax Race.
