BROOKLIN BOAT YARD NEWS - July/August 2004
Va Pensiero
On July 7, 2004 the owners cracked a bottle of champagne across the bow of “Va Pensiero” and she was lowered into the waters of Center Harbor. “Va Pensiero” is a new 49 ft full keeled cruising sloop designed by Bob Stephens and built by Brooklin Boat Yard. This boat is the second Brooklin Boat Yard built boat for “Va Pensiero’s” owners who are expanding their sailing plans beyond summers in Maine and wanted a slightly larger boat in which to cruise the US East Coast.

“Leaf” is one of the classic L28’s built by the Luders Marine Construction Company of Stamford, CT. She was launched in 1946 and spent most of her sailing years in Long Island Sound before coming to the coast of Maine. Sometime during her life she developed a leaking problem and despite attempts at repair (including the fiberglassing of the hull below the waterline) this problem persisted. Her present owner, a resident of Castine, had her trucked to Brooklin Boat Yard for some major surgery to fix this problem once and for all.
So far the topsides have been stripped and the fiberglass bottom covering along with the ballast keel have been removed. Investigation as to the extent of repairs needed is underway and plans are being formulated to put the boat back into new condition.
